So the great caravanning adventure continues. Although we haven't been very good at keeping diaries lately we got away a few times in 2008. Easter really marks the start of the season for us and this year we followed our usual trend of heading south in the early part of the year to maximise our chances of good weather.
After a quick trawl through the UK Campsite review section we settled on London Apprentice located between St Austell and Mevagissey.
The site is nice, and very easy to get to, basically M5, A30, A391 to St Austell, A390 to St Austell following town centre signs and then onto the B road to Mevagissey. The site is just as you approach London Apprentice literally at the village name sign.
They have a mix of static vans and touring pitches which all seem to be hard standing pitches with mains hook-up. There are 46 or so touring pitches in total arranged in a loop, all of generous size. The play park is well equipped and the pool is covered. There's no site shop as such but the village store and fish and chip shop are opposite the entrance so this isn't a major drawback in our opinion.
After a reasonably uneventful trip down on Saturday we made a couple of short trips out today. The first was to a large Sunday market in St. Austell which allowed us to get a cheap child's sleeping bag as Tom had managed to forget his. Ken normally uses an adult bag, so we decided to loan this to Tom and get Ken a cheap bag for the week as despite being April it could get quite chilly by night.
After that we made a trip into Mevagissey to enjoy the sunny weather in the harbour.
Yesterdays good weather has turned into today's rainstorm. We spent part of the day in St. Austell and then returned to site. Basically uneventful.
We visited Charlestown today. If you follow the road almost to the coast you'll find the older part of the town with it's historic harbour which is often used as a film set for period dramas. We spent the afternoon wandering around and visited the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre.
Nothing too eventful today, we based ourselves on site and did a little gentle walking with the dog.
A trip to the beach, Veryan Bay to be precise. There were few people braving the weather today, although it cleared up well but his meant that we could let the dog play on the beach without upsetting other people. After this and coffee we paid a visit to Caerhays Manor. We limited ourselves to the grounds as the dog can't go inside the building. The photos are all from our walk around the grounds and garden.
Again nothing special today, we revisited Mevagissey and bought a few gifts for family and ourselves. Took a drive along the coast roads which are really more like lanes. Interesting thing was that driving up the hill by Pentewan Tom, who was playing on his DSi in the back of the car, got pulled into a Pokémon battle by some other person playing DSi somewhere on the adjoining camp sites. Quite a good distance for a Wi-Fi signal.
