This vehicle was delivered on 14 April 1965 and sent to the British Army on the Rhine (BAOR) where it went into reserve storage and was not used until 25 September 1972.  The Abbot is not technically a tank but is a self propelled gun and would have formed part of an artillary battery with two other guns, an ammunition supply truck and a command vehicle.  The command truck was fitted with a forerunner of the modern GPS systems and in operation was connected to the Abbots by a hard wired system to relay gunnery information.  All the Abbots were used in Germany and approximately 170 were built.  It remained in service until the early 90's when it was replaced by the newer AS90 gun system.
